What is Fibromyalgia? Many people have found themselves asking this very question after the onset of its distressing symptoms.

by Edward William

What is Fibromyalgia? Many have found themselves asking this very question after the onset of its agonizing symptoms.

There is a extremely simple answer to this question, but the symptoms and causes of this disorder have left people with little answers. Fibromyalgia is a condition that leads to serious agony to the muscle tissue in the body.

The symptoms are really much the same as arthritis, but the results are very much different. There is a large amount of discomfort and inflammation associated with Fibromyalgia that is very like that of arthritic conditions, but it will not cause the organ damage that other disorders will cause.

The cause of this condition remains a mystery for now, though there’s currently a lot of analysis that is being done to figure it out. One thing that’s known would be that Fibromyalgia and decrease in serotonin run together with each other.

For each person which has this disorder the symptoms are different. One thing that is relentless would be that there’s pain, stiffness of muscles, and kindliness. Another common issue that folks appear to have is sleep disturbances. This could be due to pain that’s keeping them up or it might be a consequence of an issue in having the deep REM sleep that they need to feel rested.

Ways to get relief:

Treating Fibromyalgia is different for each person and will rely seriously on kinds of symptoms that they are now experiencing. Most doctors will employ a testing method of finding the right paths to help with symptoms. They could have you try different things till you find the one that works best.

Eliminating stress: By simply practicing methodologies that may reduce stress you’ll seriously scale back the symptoms that cause you discomfort. Stress has the ability of leaving our bodies vulnerable to sickness.

Exercise continually: it is a undisputed fact that exercise will help to reinforce the muscles in your body. Since the pain of Fibromyalgia is concentrated on muscles then exercising them will help build a line of defense against this painful condition.

Medications: There are many different medicines that your health practitioner can prescribe to decrease and treat your symptoms. Some physicians will use such treatments as anti-depressants that may increase serotonin levels in the brain, while other doctors choose to use pain treatment to treat the symptoms. Another choice for relieving the discomfort is muscle relaxers. As far as over the counter medicines go ibuprofen or other anti inflammatory drugs can be brought to reduce symptoms and agony.

A newer form of therapy involves drug injections containing pain medication. These drugs are usually injected right into the muscles.

Chiropractors: regular trips to your local chiropractic hospital will help provide relief to your agony and suffering. They have several treatments and techniques that might be advantageous to your musculature.

Research is presently being done to help to solve the enigmas that surround the reasons for this disorder. Many new forms of care are being tested at this moment.

What is Fibromyalgia? It is a disorder that causes pain and redness in the muscles. However, with correct diagnosis this condition can be effectively treated and the symptoms virtually eliminated.

Chiropractic health has been in existence since 1985, though it is a idea that is traceable to the period of Hippocrates. It is therefore not a new perception. The basic ideology held about chiropractic medication is that the nervous system in our body is subject to definite changes with spine manipulation ( structural and biochemical derangement of backbone ). The reason is because there is close knitting of the spine and nervous system as opined by anatomic scholars.

Therefore, the spinal structural integrity of an individual can be identified and reinstated by way of chiropractic drugs, which brings about reduction of pressure on delicate neurological tissue. Chiropractic health is concerned with the manipulation of the backbone to bring about relief and improve a person’s health. It is important to note that chiropractic doctors doesn’t make use of drugs, nor carries out surgery in the course of treatment. But there are few occasions if it becomes required for a chiropractic doctor to refer a patient to another practitioner as a result of indicating other treatment techniques.

Chiropractic Treatment process

Before chiropractic treatment can be started on a patient, the chiropractic doctor will first off examine the patient. The patient will aid the doctor to carry out a correct examination and diagnosis by supplying him with facts such as Medical treatments ( or otherwise ) in the past, General diet and nutritional habits, vocational history, family history, Psychological and social history for example.

The info supplied by the patient will help the doctor to identify the character of the illness. Then, a physical exam involving a laboratory test and x-ray might be carried out based primarily on the chiropractic doctor’s clinical conclusion.

Chiropractic health involves the use of various methods to dictate the parts of the spine that need manipulation. The often used strategy is Static and Motion Palpation; these are used to dictate fixated / hypermobile segments of the backbone. Another method is the utilization of X ray to find subluxations.

Each other chiropractic health methodology makes use of a device that identifies skin temperature in the para-spinal region; this is to find out the segments of backbone where their temperature variance is sort of apparent and so wants manipulation.

Another approach to chiropractic treatment lays emphasis on the structure balancing starting from the feet upward. This is a biomechanical approach that treats the bipedal structure in completeness. Quite a good number of times, it is the weak links in the kinetic chain that are a long way from the segments of complaint’s that are identified, and then this identified area is treated by the chiropractic doctor. In this example, the treatment strategy could involve muscular balancing bystrengthening of muscles that are under-active, and articular manipulation. The pelvis might also go through stabilization, which is ascertained by radiographic means.

Many individuals have received great relief and most times permanent cure of sickness on the spine region by chiropractic health means. It’s all about manipulating the spinal segment to create a relief. In case you’ve a need for spinal check and treatment, do not hesitate to consult a chiropractor. The treatment works!

Everyone suffers difficulties and adversity of some kind, examples of which are mental illness, disability, pain, illness and stress. Not everything is under our control and we have widely varying ways and success of dealing with these stresses. How content we are with our lives and how effective we are at life management depends on our ability to cope with these events. If we can be realistic and generate a plan for managing then success is the more likely outcome. What happens to us when we suffer setbacks is complex and we need to address several parts of the situation.

Loss figures in many of the challenges we face and this needs to be recognised as many consequences flow from this. We accept without question when we do not have any pain and feel a loss when our bodily comfort is removed. Simple activities are affected such as doing the gardening, getting the shopping and sitting in a restaurant or cinema. As we get older many changes creep up slowly upon us and we may not be happy with these and find them hard to accept. A sudden and dramatic change in our comfort or ability is much more difficult to accept, particularly if we are young or very active.

There are many potential losses such as the death of someone close, losing our job or our role in life, losing our income, breakup of a relationship and the loss of a part of the body. These losses affect and dent our self esteem. Depression is the most disabling mental difficulty in the world and largely caused by a loss of some kind, unless endogenous. Depression causes our brain chemistry to alter so that we think more negatively about what happens to us and interpret our findings in the same negative way. Depressive thinking is important due to the feelings of the person and their actions but also because depression is commonly associated with pain.

We may not be that successful in coping with and coming to terms with these losses. Hopelessness may be the result if we become depressed so we lose the motivation to take the required actions which would ameliorate our condition and situation. Cognitive therapy and antidepressant drugs can be used as required to kick start the improvement process of more realistic thinking and begin generating helpful approaches to our troubles. We can react in an entirely different manner to these challenges by fighting strongly against them.

I’m just not going to let the pain beat me is a very common sentence uttered by pain patients, turning their condition into a competition which pain is not going to win. This strategy is commonly pursued as people try to maintain control in bad circumstances, pushing themselves to keep going with their duties. There is a significant downside here though and that is the very high costs of holding a continuing battle with pain by pushing on, leading to a decline of ability, increasing pain and depression.

Conflict is one of the most important concepts here. The conflict exists between what we think we should be able to do and what we can. We can feel aggressive towards the pain and towards the world which demands things we cannot supply. We can thereby develop a relationship of conflict with others and within ourselves which can obstruct us from generating alternative approaches to our problems and gets us stuck in a rigid behaviour. These problems are all related to not accepting the reality of our situation and we cannot move forward as those actions are not acceptable.

The idea of acceptance is important and should not be mixed up with resignation. In resignation we feel helpless and that we just have to accept everything, thinking that nothing much will change things for the better and we have to put up with the situation permanently in this way. This kind of very negative assessment of the problem will lead most likely towards depression and make it unlikely the person will take actions to get themselves out of their situation. It is undesirable to feel resignation and more functional to learn acceptance and so work at changing the future for the better.

If you suffer from chronic low back pain like many people, you may have tried several different treatments designed to deal with the pain.

by Dr. Randall Pruitt

If you suffer from chronic low back pain like many people, you may have tried several different treatments designed to deal with the pain.

In most cases of low back pain the disc is the source of discomfort. Many studies have shown that the disc is overwhelmingly to blame for episodes of low back pain. The facet joints and the SI joints also contribute but as as commonly as the disc.

One thing that most people don’t understand about the disc is that while it is the most pain sensitive structure in the spine it is only initially pain sensitive in the outer 1/3. This is one of the reasons pain can hit so suddenly because as the inner portion of the disc is migrating outwards you don’t feel pain, but once the outer fibers are involved low back pain will be experienced.

The disc is very susceptible to dehydration and degeneration primarily because if it’s lack of a direct blood supply. It receives it’s vital nutrients and hydration from the bones above and below where a rich blood supply is present. Once the disc becomes damaged the disc loses it’s ability to maintain hydration and it becomes dry and much more likely to deteriorate.

One little known fact about disc pain is that once a disc begins to dry out it becomes more pain sensitive. That’s because certain cells that hold hydration in the disc also inhibit the growth of pain sensitive nerves in the disc. So once a disc drys out painful nerves become more abundant.

Spinal Decompression is the only treatment that actually increases hydration and nutrition into the disc so it can heal. This allows the disc to begin the regeneration process and it also allows the inhibition of the pain sensitive nerves to be restored so that the disc is no longer painful throughout.

The mechanism behind spinal decompression is very complex, although many will tell you it looks similar to traction. The difference is that unlike traction, spinal decompression has a patented computer system that analyzes muscle contraction responses and changes the forces to overcome muscle contraction.

The benefits of spinal decompression are very effective for disc health. First the negative pressure created helps to draw in any bulging or herniated material that my be compressing or irritating the nerves and secondly it actively creates a fluid exchange bringing in fresh oxygen and nutrition into the disc so it can heal.

Unlike most treatment that are primarily concerned with the symptoms spinal decompression actually deals with the primary source of the patients pain, which in most cases is the disc.

If you suffer from low back pain and have tried other treatments that have not worked for you, spinal decompression can offer you a valuable treatment option that can last.

by Philip Vincent

Bad posture often comes from fatigue, habits and activity level. Many people are sedentary and tend to slouch. This puts undue stress on our spine and muscles, which can lead to back pain. The good news is you can work on improving your posture at any age, but you will be more successful in the long run if you begin young.

Sitting or standing for long periods can cause your muscles to become tired. This may lead to improper positioning. If you can take steps to prevent this, you’ll feel a lot better. Some of the things you can do are taking breaks and change position. If you sit a lot, get up and walk around. Do some stretches. Relieve those muscles that are carrying the entire burden from your slouching. If you stand a lot, take some time to sit down and let your muscles rest. Using proper shoes or a supportive desk chair can help you maintain better posture while you work. Getting enough sleep on a good mattress will help as well.

Some people develop back pain from their bad posture to the point that they need to seek help. Chiropractic care can help a lot of people with relieving the stress and strain that develops from bad posture. A chiropractor will do spinal adjustments to help put the spine back into alignment. This will help your back to feel better. Your chiropractor can give you some exercises that will help improve your posture so your pain doesn’t return.

There are other things you can do to help improve your posture so your back doesn’t continue to give you pain. When you sit at a desk, sit close to the desk. Use a footrest like an old phone book to change your center of gravity and prevent your back from curling into a “C” shape. When you are standing a lot, have a small stool or thick book available so you can rest one leg at a time and take some of the stress off of your back. Don’t lock your knees, and don’t jut your chin out. Rocking from heels to toes will also help relieve the fatigue in your back.

Bad posture also can have other effects on your body. If you lean forward too much, chances are you will experience eye strain and headaches due to being too close to your computer screen. If you slump in your chair, you may be stretching too far to reach your mouse. Either of these positions can contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome because your wrists will be either extended or flexed for long periods of time while performing repetitive tasks.

Taking the time to improve your posture can not only relieve your back pain, but it can give you a better outlook. Slumping is linked with a low level of confidence or depression.

Even if you are sitting in the proper position, remember to take time to get up and stretch from time to time. Changing positions and getting the blood flowing will relieve any fatigue that is building up and energize you for your next work session.

As children we have the great gift of a mobile, strong, well designed and painless spine and it is unusual for stiffness to be an issue as the lumbar spine has evolved to do the job of weight bearing and providing movement. Intervertebral discs separate the spinal vertebrae, allowing more movement in areas where they are thicker and also coping with variable loads. The posterior spinal facet joints limit and control segmental movement, preventing the spine from displacing inappropriately under the shear forces. Strong, balanced and coordinated muscle actions complete the picture.

An acute episode of low back pain inhibits the core stabilising muscles from working well and can cause wasting of them with time. Segmental loss of stability control can make the occurrence of further low back pain episodes at the same level more likely. As time and injuries change the spine, degenerative changes can occur in the facet joints and discs, leading to segmental stiffness and chronic back pain. The force of gravity pushes fluid from the discs by compression and is opposed by a chemical absorption of fluid which is more powerful in lying.

As compression forces tend to be more powerful as time goes on, dehydration of the disc occurs to some extent as it narrows and stiffens. This can be imaged on x-ray but the disc is likely to show changes and painful problems long before the results can be seen on x-ray. A segment is defined as two adjacent vertebrae and the intervening intervertebral disc, an altered disc contributing to an abnormal segment which moves abnormally and pushes abnormal loads onto tissues where they are not designed to take them. Physiotherapists can feel the restrictions in spinal movements which occur when a stiff segment limits segmental excursion.

Protective muscle spasms are common after an injury and this splints the affected area and allows the process of inflammation and healing to get started. With the gradual resolution of the injury and its pain reduction the amount of back spasms normally lessens and slowly normal movements begin to be apparent again. But muscles can remain in muscle spasm in some cases, leading to a stiffened and shortened group of spinal structures which, by this adaptive shortening, leads to the production of shortened and abnormal spinal joints, ligaments and muscles.

Increase of the compression forces through the spine can be promoted by sitting for long periods, leading to increase in the fluid loss from the discs. Discs rely on us repeatedly bending forwards for disc health and nutrition and avoidance of this movement compromises disc wellbeing, leading to an increased potential risk of degenerative change. A weakness in the abdominal muscles and the development of abnormal postures also contribute to these problems.

A typical history is to have an episode of severe low back pain which gradually develops into a segmental stiffness problem. The stiff areas may be present asymptomatically for many years in many individual areas of the spine before one of them develops into a painful segment which causes restriction. Sitting for a long time or spending time bent into flexion will tend to aggravate this condition once established as joints are moved beyond their comfortable limits. The lumbar facet joints become fixed into extension and the whole segment suffers from adaptive shortening, forfeiting its ability to move normally. I have back problems very like this and it can be quite difficult, forcing me to limit heavy or repetitive work or any significant time in flexion.

Sarah Key, a physiotherapist who is well known in the UK, has produced the Sarah Key’s Back Sufferers Bible, a book in which she sets out her views of what is going on in this most common of musculoskeletal syndromes. She does acknowledge that it is hard to bring solid evidence for many of her interpretations but seems to have many good and practical therapy ideas to approach the back pain problem with. She covers the main syndromes which typically occur, giving treatment routines for self management of each one, all of which I have found very useful for my own lower back pain. Now I have something I can do about it rather than accept it as a fact of life.

Do it yourself chronic back pain relief can be achieved at home and could be the most convenient way of dealing with a problem that affects freedom of movement and maybe even mobility.

Our backs can fail without warning, and it is often something very simple, like picking an iron up at arms length that can lead to that first ominous twinge in the back, followed by later more serious pain as the injury takes root. Quick home remedies can be the answer. Most incidents of chronic back pain are short lived lasting only a few days. Then there is always the old sports trainer’s trick of applying something cold pressed to the wounded area to prevent inflammation and swelling. Nowadays it is recommended that any “cold” treatments should be followed immediately by a warm treatment as this can help to restore the circulation quickly.

Doing gentle exercise, such as swimming, walking and muscle stretches can be beneficial for chronic back pain relief. It is important that you should try not to let the pain divert you form performing your normal activities, as regular movement can help to stop the problem from immobilizing you. Regular light exercise is always a good idea, even under normal circumstances, but in the case of chronic back pain, it can substantially reduce the healing time.

Exercise is always a good response to chronic back pain. It’s like telling the pain that it’s not going to prevent you from doing what you normally do, that you’re not going to let it win by ruining your usual lifestyle. Chances are that if you do give in to it, that it could entrench itself forever.

There are some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS, that can help. Drugs like Ibuprofen are also effective. But you should be careful and use these in the short term only as prolonged use can lead to ulcers or other stomach ailments. They do hide pain, but remember you need to cure the cause. If the cause still persists it warrants further investigation and a change of treatment or medication. It may also be worth considering muscle relaxants to see if they bring any comfort, but their use should be short term only to avoid any dependency occurring There are also things called COX 2 inhibitors that have a history of helping with chronic back pain disorders but beware, they have been linked with causing heart disease, so consult a doctor before taking anything.

Certain complimentary treatments or therapies (such as the Alexander Technique) can help. These programs are a way of teaching you how to use your body muscles and joints correctly, including posture etc, to minimize any undue, unnatural and unnecessary stress being exerted. Also, acupuncture, while not a self help solution, can still be considered “natural” and has shown proven results and has many devotees.

Collagen plays as large role in the health of spinal discs and regular daily doses of up to 2500g of vitamin C, which supports collagen growth, can provide back pain relief. It is often recommended that taking daily doses of Glucosamine Sulphate may facilitate the repair of chronic back pain causes.

Pets: you can love them and hate them simultaneously. One moment they are peeing on your favourite shirt, and the next they give you more TLC than you have ever received in your life. But regardless of what they do or how you feel about them, there are many health advantages to having a pet:

1) Lower stress levels and blood pressure. According to studies conducted at the University of Warwick, interacting with pets (such as stroking them or playing with them) has the tendency to lower a persons blood pressure and relax them. In another study, stockbrokers with high blood pressure readings were asked to adopt a cat or a dog, and those who did were later found to have much lower blood pressure levels in stressful situations that those who did not adopt a pet. Of course, this will not work if you do not like animals or are afraid of them ” then they will probably cause more anxiety than they resolve.

2) Recovery from illness. Pets have been known to help people in astounding ways, but they have the greatest number of success stories with heart attack patients. Various studies show that patients who have suffered from a heart attack tend to live longer if they have a pet at home, and they are also less prone to heart disease than non-pet owners. Pets can also serve as a loyal support system to their bed-ridden owners, providing them with the comfort that results in a quicker recovery.

In extreme cases, such as when a person is in a coma, surgeons have even recommended for a pet to be brought to the patients bedside. While there is no real evidence to support this claim, there have been incidences when the pets presence helped the patient awake from their coma. Dogs, in particular, have also been known to offer relief to Alzheimers and Parkinsons patients.

3) Improves social life. Many domesticated animals are social creatures, and therefore provide much social interaction ” whether it is a cat that curls up and falls a sleep on your lap or a dog that follows you from room to room ” a pet owner is very rarely alone. Pets also serve as great ice-breakers or conversation starters among strangers, both inside and outside the home.

4) Happiness. It is often underestimated how much pets can influence our happiness. In many cases they have helped their owners deal with loss and hardships, even helping them fight depression. Some psychologists have even recommended the use of pets in therapy sessions, as petting a rabbit or playing with a dog raises the serotonin levels in our brain. Being greeted by an energetic dog or purring cat that is excited to see you can be very uplifting if you feel like the life just isnt going your way. This is why pets are also used in elderly homes, to help individuals feel less lonely and isolated.

Regardless of whether you break up with a loved one or lose your job, your pet will love you no matter what; and that, in itself, is an essential quality that human beings cannot live without.

by Philip Vincent

Sciatica can cause pain, numbness or weakness in your hip, buttock and leg. Chiropractic and sciatica is a good match because chiropractic care can address many of the issues that can cause sciatic pain. Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed, inflamed or irritated.

The sciatic nerve happens to be the largest and longest nerve in your entire body. It starts at the spinal column close to your pelvis and down each leg. This nerve can be as wide as your thumb near its point of origin. As the sciatic nerve progresses downward, it breaks into five branches that serve your thigh, knee, calf, ankle and foot. It is easy to see why it can be so incapacitating when this nerve is compressed.

Causes of Sciatica Misalignment (subluxation) of the spine Pelvic misalignment Slipped or herniated disc from a fall or accident Tumors Diabetes Arthritis Vitamin deficiencies Pregnancy

Simple movements are often the triggers for sciatic pain. Actions that you would normally not give a second thought to, like sitting, standing, walking, lifting, sneezing or bending may be enough to send sharp pains down your leg from your hip. Chiropractors have treated many sciatica cases successfully over the years.

Many people don’t realize that sciatica often begins with lower back pain. They may feel these aches and pains for a few weeks before the true sciatica pain begins. They may feel pain, numbness or weakness start in the hip and move through the buttocks, then down through the thigh, the calf and finally the foot. The pain can be as minimal as a dull ache or it can be a hot, shooting pain. Pain can last for a few minutes, a few hours or several days or weeks. The pain going down the leg eventually becomes worse and more severe than that in the lower back. Those who have suffered sciatica for a long time will realize the pain will eventually localize in the buttocks and thighs. If left untreated, the nerve may sustain permanent damage and the calf muscle may begin to deteriorate.

Most people will wait until the sciatica pain is completely unbearable before they seek the aid of a doctor of chiropractic. This can and may lead to permanent nerve damage. If you contact a chiropractor when you first feel sciatic pain, there is a much higher success rate and a better chance of relieving the pain and fixing the cause. A chiropractor will take your personal medical history when you first meet, and then do a thorough physical exam. You may need x-rays, but that will depend on what they find. The chiropractor will discuss the results and recommended treatment with you.

Chiropractic manipulation to your spine may be done to help correct any misalignments. These adjustments help remove any blockages that may be putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. Muscle spasms may be treated with massage or other muscle techniques. Your chiropractor may also recommend ice, heat, or ultrasound treatments to help relieve the symptoms. In the most cases, several sessions of manual adjustments are adequate to relieve the problem.

Chiropractic care for sciatica pain works well. Sciatica has a typical underlying cause that can be determined. Chiropractic care can not only relieve the symptoms but remove the cause as well, so the chance of a return of the pain is minimal. X-rays taken pre and post-treatment have proven that chiropractic care realigned the spine and reduced the symptoms. Before you take pain medications to simply cover up your symptoms, see a chiropractor if you think you may be developing sciatica.
